BlavinScholars.org: What degree(s) will you be receiving this spring and what inspired you to pursue that particular major?
Drew: International Studies. Having an interest in foreign cultures from an early age, I thought that this major would help me find a job that would allow me to do what I love.
BlavinScholars.org: What awards or honors have you received while at U-M?
Drew: Residence Hall Association Committee Chair of the Year, Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Case Study, 1st Prize, Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship, Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
BlavinScholars.org: What is your favorite U-M memory or experience and why?
Drew: Definitely studying abroad in Japan! I started learning Japanese in high school and never had the opportunity to travel there or anywhere else due to financial constraints. However, the summer of my sophomore year, I went to Japan for the first time along with my best friend Will, and had an amazing time!
BlavinScholars.org: What are your short-term goals for after graduation?
Drew: I am planning on teaching English abroad in either Japan or South Korea.
BlavinScholars.org: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Drew: Getting my Masters in Public Health and working to improve health in minority communities!
BlavinScholars.org: How have you grown as a person since first entering college?
Drew: I’ve learned how to love myself and not be ashamed of my past. I realized that by being authentic and showing who I truly am, I can inspire people to do the same.
BlavinScholars.org: What excites you most about your future?
Drew: That I have one!
BlavinScholars.org: What advice about higher education and life, in general, would you give to high school students who have experienced foster care?
Drew: Don’t let the circumstances of your past determine your future.

BlavinScholars.org: What’s your biggest takeaway from your experience as a Blavin Scholar?
Drew: I realized that I am not a burden and there are many of people out here who want to help me and watch me succeed.
